Legacy beat Richmond in dramatic fashion
Ernst’s 90th minute goal gives Virginia the win
Williamsburg, VA (June 6, 2007) - With the score knotted at one and the final whistle quickly approaching, Doug Ernst hit a one-time shot by Richmond goalkeeper, Andrew Dykstra to put the Virginia Legacy to a 4-3 record after downing the Richmond Kickers Future in Richmond, VA.
On a hot and sunny evening, the Legacy came right out of the gates in the first half and put the Kickers Future under immediate pressure from the first whistle. The Legacy dominated possession all over the field in the first half and came away with a number of quality chances. Unfortunately, the Legacy never found the back of the net. Richmond had their best chance just minutes before the half as they put a ball over an open Legacy net from just 8 yards out. After everything was said and done, the two teams went into the locker rooms with a scoreless first half.
The Kickers Future came into the second half with more of a determination and put Virginia under a bit of pressure at times. That pressure paid off in the 58th minute as Delano Pierre broke the match open off a counter attack started from a miscued Legacy corner kick. Price Thomas ran the ball up the field on a fast break and played Pierre through who eventually finished the ball in the corner past Legacy goalie, Zak Thompson.
With the Legacy down a goal after their impressive play in the first half, it didn’t take long at all to even the match up. Less than a minute later, Andrew Hoxie took on a defender and put away a beautiful shot from the corner of the 18-yard box, right into the far upper corner of the goal.
For the remainder of the half, play was fairly even as both teams had their fair share of chances. With the clock reading 90:00 and injury time just underway, the Legacy crossed a ball into the box from the right side of the field where Steve Fell hit a powerful shot from 10 yards out. Andrew Dykstra made the crucial save for Richmond but the ball fell right to forward, Andrew Hoxie’s feet. Hoxie played the ball across the 6-yard box which was cleared out to Legacy midfielder Doug Ernst. Ernst hit a one time shot in the left lower corner of the goal to solidify the three points for the Legacy. With hardly any time remaining on the clock, the game was over and Virginia was able to pull off the dramatic win.
With the win, the Virginia Legacy improves to 4-3-0 as the Richmond Kickers Future drops 3-2-1. The Virginia Legacy will be back in action this Friday as they host the Reading Rage at Albert/Daly Field in Williamsburg, VA.
