Cristman redirected the ball into the goal to put Richmond up 1-0. In the 65th minute, the Legacy struck back. Following the pattern of late, Pat Scherder beat the defense, but was fouled, this time just outside of the penalty area. Brannon Thomas took the free kick and slotted it into the far left corner to tie the game. In the 79th minute Gonzalo Segares carried the ball down the left sideline and passed the ball to Scherder on the right side of the field. The Williamsburg Legacy took over 1st place in the South Atlantic division of the PDL with a gutsy 2-0 victory over previous division leader Carolina Dynamo. The Legacy is the only team to have beaten the Dynamo this season.

Both goals were first half penalties. In the 15th minute Brian Hinkle slipped a ball behind the Dynamo defense, and Pat Scherder was brought down by Osei Telesford. Hinkle then calmly slotted the goal. In the 32nd minute Brannon Thomas flicked a ball again behind the right side of the defense and Scherder was bundled over for the second time. Hinkle's penalty was blocked by goalkeeper Alex Maslow, but he headed in the rebound for his second goal of the evening.

The Legacy back four of Cann, Marklin, Scott and Brown along with goalkeeper John Connelly got their 2nd shutout in three games. John Connelly made several huge saves down the stretch and Rob Cann, Jeff Marklin, Brian Scott and Alex Brown helped keep chances to a minimum.

Next up for the Legacy is a big home match versus in-state rivals Richmond Kickers Future. The Future hammered the Legacy 4-0 two weeks ago in Richmond.

The Legacy improves to 7-4 on the season and rides a three game win streak into the Richmond game. Game time is 7PM @ CNU's Captains Field on Saturday. For directions please go to http://www.williamsburglegacy.com/stadium.htm#CNU

Brief Summary by

The Williamsburg Legacy followed Friday night’s 4-0 victory over West Virginia with another outstanding performance, defeating the professional Harrisburg Islanders 2-1 on Busch

Field Saturday. The match began aggressively as the outsized Legacy muscled to retain possession. In the 25th minute, the Islanders struck first. Off of a lofted corner kick, the

ball ricocheted around the goal box before landing right in front of J.T. Dorsey who seized the moment and planted the ball into the goal. Despite an array of Legacy attacks, the Islanders held the lead going into the half.

In the 48th minute, an open Robbie Wright beat the Islander keeper from close range. A defender was positioned in exactly the right spot on the goal line and removed the danger. Rather than becoming discouraged, the Williamsburg offense, led by Pat Scherder coming off of a spectacular game Friday night, kept creating opportunities to score. In the 74th minute the Legacy persistence, coupled with a timely substitution, paid dividends. Clayton Voss, who had entered the game just a minute earlier, received a ball on the right side. He drove the ball to the left side of the goal where Brannon Thomas raced in and scored off of a dramatic diving header.

The Legacy wasted no time setting up the game winner. In the 80th minute, Pat Scherder put a pass in from the endline to Clayton Voss. Voss took a crack, but was denied by the Islander keeper. Alex Brown ran in from the right side, timed the rebound perfectly, and scorched a shot to the upper 90 from 30 yards out, sealing the win for the Legacy.

Williamsburg plays again next Saturday night on the campus of Christopher Newport University at 7 pm.

Brief Summary by

Tim Boykin

The Williamsburg Legacy ended their scoring slump on a rainy Friday night, beating the West Virginia Chaos 4-0.  Controlling the ball early, Williamsburg’s Patrick Scherder threatened to score as the Legacy dumped the ball deep into West Virginia’s territory and let the speedy Scherder blast by the defense. From the left side however, Scherder could not initially find the goal. The powerful Legacy surge could only be turned away for a short while. In the 17th minute, Ricardo Valverde played a perfect ball over and around a Chaos defender. Brannon Thomas shot the ball right out of the air into the back of the net.  In the 30th minute Valverde was issued his 2nd yellow card of the night, leading to an automatic red card and an ejection from the game. The Chaos had a few threatening scoring chances being a man up, but a few great steals and slide tackles from the Legacy defense kept the threats from amounting to a goal. Instead of playing on their heals with only 10 players, the Legacy continued to attack, continuously breaking away with numbers forward. In spite of these attacks, the Chaos was able to keep the score at 1-0 entering the intermission.

The Legacy, led by Patrick Scherder, kept up the offensive pressure in the 2nd half. Scherder hit paydirt when Robbie Wright hit him with a long pass from the back.  Scherder dribbled nearly half the field, beating a defender and the keeper and finally netted a left footed shot from inside the goal box. In the 66th minute, Scherder again contributed to a Legacy goal. He got past the Chaos defense, but found himself pinned against the left endline. Scherder passed the ball back to Brannon Thomas cutting towards the goal. Thomas one touched the ball in, easily scoring his second goal of the night. In the 83rd minute, substitute Chris Mein made a move to beat his man and took a shot on goal. The Chaos keeper made the save, but the rebound bounced directly to Robbie Wright. Wright passed the ball across the goal to Ado Fazlic who nudged the ball in from close range. The Legacy hopes to carry their newly

found offensive firepower into Saturday night’s 7pm game against the professional Harrisburg City Islanders.

Brief Summary by

Tim Boykin

Lady Luck was unkind to the Williamsburg Legacy Sunday night as they lost to the Raleigh CASL Elite 0-2. It seemed the Legacy had control of the game in the early going. They used

excellent passing out of the back to set up opportunities in their offensive midfield. On the other hand, the Raleigh defense made careless errors, making it easy for the Legacy

to retain possession. However, despite all the Legacy efforts, they were unable to finish for a goal. In the 39th minute, Raleigh penetrated the Williamsburg defense. Steven Curfman passed the ball from the endline through to David Buehler who poked the ball near post to put the Elite up 1- 0.

In the second half, the Legacy’s misfortune continued. Pat Scherder came in off the bench to provide a spark to the offense and just missed scoring on some of his attempts. Raleigh had a yellow card at the top of the box in the 65th minute, but the Legacy failed to convert the ensuing set-piece. Alex Brown was fouled shortly after at the same spot, but again the Legacy could not capitalize. In the 74th minute, Brannon Thomas had two point blank looks, but was denied both times by Raleigh goalkeeper Justin Hughes. The wind was taken out of the Legacy’s sails when Raleigh’s speedy substitute Bryant Salter sprinted past the

Williamsburg backs and took a point blank shot on goal. John Connelly was able to make the save, but Stephen Bickford was there to put the rebound away.

Despite outshooting the Elite 32 -11 in the game, the Legacy was shutout in this Mid-Atlantic District matchup. The Legacy plays at home on Friday and Saturday nights next week against West Virginia and Harrisburg City.

Brief Summary by

Tim Boykin

The Williamsburg Legacy added three more points to their season total Saturday night, beating the Chesapeake Dragons at Busch Field 2-0.

The first half was filled with aggressive play. Only one yellow card was issued, however, and the players on each team battled hard for possession, but neither was able to put together a successful scoring sequence as the teams played to a scoreless half.

The Legacy’s best opportunity was in the 39th minute when a ball floated into the Chesapeake penalty box ricocheted off Graham Albert. With the ball lingering in the air, Alex Brown executed an acrobatic bicycle kick that beat the Dragon goaltender but clanked off the far post.

The Legacy finally broke down the Dragon defense in the 64th minute. Alex Brown passed the ball in from the sideline and Clayton Voss was on the receiving end to score the game’s first goal.

Ten minutes later, Ado Fazlic played a ball through to Robbie Wright who stretched out to poke the ball past the Chesapeake goalkeeper to extend the Legacy lead.

John Connelly made 11 saves in the game including two incredible saves in the last minute to lead the Legacy defense to its first shutout of the season.

The Legacy takes the field next June 4 against the Richmond Kickers Future in Richmond.

Williamsburg Legacy 0 - 4 Virginia Beach Mariners (Exhibition)
May 18th, 2004
Captains Field, Christopher Newport University, VA  - 7:00 pm Kickoff

Brief Summary by

Tim Boykin

The Williamsburg Legacy suffered a hard 4-0 loss on Tuesday night in a exhibition match against the A-League’s Virginia Beach Mariners at Captain’s Field on the campus of Christopher Newport University.  The speed of the Mariners caught the Legacy off guard early as Virginia Beach’s Pato Aguilera got free behind the defense in the second minute and easily scored off of a free ball in the penalty box as Legacy keeper Brian Schumate slipped trying to make the play.

However, while holding the Mariners scoreless for the rest of the half, Williamsburg picked up its intensity and threatened the to score many times.  Forward Randy Ugarte had seven shots in the game, most of them in the first half, but time after time he was turned away by Virginia Beach goalie Matt Nelson.  In the 32nd minute Ugarte finally beat Nelson with a roller to the far post, but Virginia Beach defender Russell Hutchison slid in to clear the ball and deny the Legacy the equalizing goal.

In the second half, the Legacy used multiple substitutions in an attempt to use fresh legs to score a goal on the bigger and faster Mariners.  Unfortunately, the Mariner’s experience took over and they were able to extend their lead.  In the 53rd minute, Nate Winkel snuck a goal in past Legacy goalkeeper Chris Brown.  Aguilera struck again in the 70th minute off of a Winkel assist.  Virginia Beach’s final goal came in the 79th minute from veteran Dante Washington.  Ugarte and Drew Harrison each had scoring attempts in the game’s waning minutes for the Legacy, but the Mariner’s defense held fast.  The Legacy will try to shake off a two game losing streak when it plays at Raleigh CASL Elite on Friday.  On Saturday night division rival Carolina Dynamo comes to Williamsburg.

Chaos fall 2-1 at home to Legacy

Friday, May 14, 2004 - www.wvchaos.com

CHARLESTON, WV -- The West Virginia Chaos fell in its home opener to the Williamsburg Legacy 2-1 at Schoenbaum Stadium in Charleston, WV Friday night.

The Chaos took the lead on a free kick just outside the penalty area. Midfielder Bradley Cobbs' (Carson Newman College) shot went over the Williamsburg wall and past the Legacy goalkeeper for a 1-0 Chaos lead in the 22nd minute.

West Virginia completely outplayed the Legacy in the first half and held the 1-0 lead until halftime.

In the second half, the Chaos faced a different Legacy team. Williamsburg intensified its attack, and put its first goal on the board with a shot and score by Legacy midfielder Graham Albert in the 61st minute.

Then, in the 78th minute, Legacy forward Robbie Wright put the ball in the Chaos' goal, for a 2-1 lead.

West Virginia had a chance to draw even with three minutes left in the game on another free kick by Cobbs, but his shot hit the crossbar. Williamsburg dodged a bullet, and held on for the 2-1 win.

The Chaos (0-3) will next host the Richmond Kickers Future at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 15 at the Beckley YMCA Soccer Complex in Beckley, WV.

Brief Summary by

Tim Boykin, WSC Media Relations

The Williamsburg Legacy started their season well with a 3-1 victory over Raleigh Castle Elite at Busch Field on Sunday night.  Playing with only 10 men, Raleigh was hard pressed to put up any kind of a fight against the Legacy’s attack.  The Legacy retained possession in Raleigh’s end of the field for most of the first half, yet only had one goal to show for 17 shots, when, in the 9th minute, Brannon Thomas drove home an assist from Clayton Voss to take the early lead.

In the second half, the Legacy was able to create more opportunities as the fatigue of shorthanded Elite became apparent.  In the 64th minute Jose Umana delivered a ball to Brannon Thomas outside of the penalty box who preceded to score his second goal of the game with a powerful strike sailing in just below the crossbar.  The Legacy used a series of excellent passing to set up a goal for Alex Brown in the 83rd minute.  Brown received the ball on the right sideline from Graham Albert, cut in to the goal, and sent a left-footed bullet past the Elite’s keeper.  Raleigh’s only goal came from Arron Saunders in the 89th minute off of a corner kick from Chase Perfect.

The Legacy hopes to continue their solid start when they travel to play the West Virginia Chaos for their next game on Friday May 14th.
