Legacy Take Wild Card Slot
For Premier Development League Playoffs
Beat Richmond Kickers Future 6-2 on the
last day to qualify
The Williamsburg Legacy came out very
sluggish Friday night in the home finale but would not send the fans
home unhappy in their game against the Raleigh Elite from North
Carolina. After Raleigh Elite scored three times in the first 28
minutes, the Legacy had their backs to the wall. The crowd of 314 at
Albert Daly Field although were in for a show. The momentum swung
heavily for the Legacy in the 36th minute. Taylor Rowe scored his
third goal of the season off a throw in from Brendan McCurdy and the
Legacy went into halftime with strong hopes after making it 3-1.
Coach Rich Butler must have had an inspiring halftime speech because
the Legacy came out very strong in the second half. Pat
Scherder scored a great goal from a
Justin Madrid through ball down the left6 in the 51st minute and the
Legacy had cut the lead to 3-2. Scherder
would strike again 3 minutes later on a threw-ball by Andrew Hoxie.
Scherder blazed down the right side past
the defense and slipped the ball past the keeper to even the score
at 3-3. Both teams created a few more chances but the comeback was
halted and the game finished in a 3-3 draw.
With the Legacy controlling their
playoff destiny Sunday afternoon, they displayed an impressive
offensive attack and defeated the Richmond Kickers 6-2. It did not
take long for the Legacy to strike as Ross
Mackensie found the back of the net with a brilliant toe poke
finish after a good buildup and assist by Pat
Scherder. The Legacy controlled the possession the entire
half and added a goal in the 45th minute to go up 2-0 at halftime.
After another good string of passes Brannon Thomas found Andrew
Hoxie and he placed a shot just over the stretched arms on the
Richmond keeper Andrew Dykstra. The offense continued in the second
half as Andrew Hoxie slipped a shot into the side netting in the
51st minute to give the Legacy a comfortable 3-0 lead. The scoring
would not stop there for the Legacy. Ross
Mackensie scored his second of the day in the 59th minute
with an assist from Andrew Hoxie. Twelve minutes later Taylor Rowe
was fouled in the box and Brannon Thomas converted on a well placed
penalty kick to make it 5-0 in favor of the Legacy. Richmond scored
two late goals and the scoring was complete when Legacy’s
Nate Burkey
fired a great shot into the upper corner to give the Legacy a 6-2
lead and a birth into the PDL playoffs. Chris Brown ended with 6
saves and the Legacy finished the season with a record of 8-4-4.

Legacy travels to Florida and comes away with 6 points
Scores 6 goals in the process
This past weekend
the Williamsburg Legacy traveled to Orlando, Florida for two out of
conference matches against the Ajax Orlando Prospects and the
Central Florida Kraze. The Legacy left on Wednesday evening and
traveled through the night for 12 hours to Orlando. Arriving on
Thursday the guys had a day to rest and get their legs sorted out
after a long bus ride. The first game was on Friday evening against
Ajax Orlando who were 1-10-1 on the
season, however, losing 8 times by a single goal.
Knowing that the
team from Florida would come out hard the Legacy knew they had to
jump on them early. That is exactly what they did when Bobby
O’Brien scored his first goal of the season in a one on one
situation just 11 minutes into the game on a great through ball from
Matt Behncke. The score would stay 1-0 until the 22nd minute when
Brendan McCurdy, a Florida native playing in front of family and
friends, scored on a header from a Ross Mackenzie corner kick. This
would give the Legacy a comfortable lead heading into the half. At
the start of the second half the home team came out very strong and
forced the Legacy to pull back and defend with everyone behind the
ball at times. Playing with a lone striker in the second half Ross
Mackenzie sent a chipped through ball to a streaking Pat Scherder
who beat a defender before curling a left footed shot into the lower
corner of the goal to make the score 3-0 in the 64th minute. Just
under a minute later Orlando was able to pull a goal back to make
the score 3-1. The Legacy then began to find themselves with most
of the possession and they were able to make things easier on
themselves for the rest of the game. In stoppage time, substitute
Justin Vaughter took a through ball from Jeff Marklin and was able
to beat the keep for the 4th goal of the night for the Legacy and
seal the deal on the road. The Legacy won 4-1 and would have to
turn around less than 20 hours later to play the Central Florida
Kraze, who were second in their division.
Playing their
second game in 20 hours with only 14 players available was not going
to be an easy task facing a Central Florida Kraze team that is
second in the Southeast Division. The game started off very slowly
as both teams showed that they did not want to concede an early
goal. Mid way through the first half Justin Monroe was able to get
in behind the defense on the right side and cause some havoc however
the Kraze keeper was up to the task each time. In the 35th minute
in a flurry in front of the Legacy goal Chris Brown made a huge
diving save coupled with Jeff Marklin sweeping a ball off the goal
line to keep score knotted heading into halftime. After halftime,
realizing that the Legacy needed to try to get 3 more points, they
came out firing on all cylinders. After some pressure in the back
the Legacy were able to force a turnover which resulted in Brannon
“Z” Thomas, intercepting the ball and playing a little chip over the
last defender for Ross Mackensie to run onto and lob over the
keepers head to give the Legacy the lead 1-0. It was Mackensie’s
team leading 5th goal of the season. With 27 minutes to play
following a flurry of shots in the Kraze box in which 2 shots were
saved off the goal line, Central Florida was able to catch the
Legacy off guard on a counter attack and tie the game 1-1. In the
83rd minute off a turnover in the midfield the Legacy were on a 3 on
2 break in which Bobby O’Brien sent a shot from the top of the box
and was saved by the keeper and then rebounded off the post where
Justin Vaughter’s rebound shot was saved on the goal line by a
defender using his hands. The penalty resulted in a red card and a
penalty kick in which Ross Mackensie stepped up to score his 6th
goal of the season and send the Legacy back to Virginia with an
impressive 6 points. The road trip was a great success as they
pulled into first place in the Wild Card race for the Eastern
Conference, and sole possession of second
place in their division 7 points behind Virginia Beach with a game
at hand.
The Legacy now
hold the Wild Card spot for the playoffs
with 4 games remaining. They play the Richmond Kickers Future on
Friday evening at Albert-Daly Field at 7pm with 3 more important
points on the line as they make a push to win the division crown and
earn a spot in the National Playoff race.

The
Legacy beat the Northern VA Royals 4-0 Tuesday night at Albert/Daly
Field.
Williamsburg
played very well for the entire night with only a twenty minute spell
where
Northern Virginia
looked dangerous. The Legacy opened the campaign with a very good
stretch of soccer and had the Royals back on their heels. Forward
Brannon Thomas scored the first goal for the Legacy off a corner kick
from Ross MacKenzie. After the goal the Legacy were lulled into
complacency and the Royals were able to create a couple dangerous
scoring chances that went off the crossbar. Goalkeeper Chris Brown made
a couple fantastic saves to keep the Legacy up 1-0 heading into
halftime. Coach Richard Butler appeared to fire up his team with a half
time speech as the Legacy came out in the second half on fire.
Patrick
Scherder scored a cracking goal in the 50th minute off a beautiful ball
from Clayton Voss to bring the score line to 2-0. The Legacy created a
few more chances and had a couple shots miss just wide and a shot hit
the crossbar. Ross MacKenzie killed off the game in the 80th minute with
a lovely bit of skill before finishing off a left-footed blast in the
lower right hand corner. The Legacy would add a fourth goal when
substitute Justin Vaughter slotted the ball home from a wonderful
buildup.
The
Legacy will be back in action Friday Night at Albert/Daly field against
league leaders Virginia Beach Submariners. Game time is

The
Williamsburg Legacy fell to the Carolina Dynamo Friday night at
Albert/Daly Field. The Legacy was playing the PDL leading Dynamo and
played some solid soccer for a large portion of the game. In an evenly
matched game, Dynamo Forward Michael Rose scored the game winner off
an assist from Jamie Franks that beat goal keeper Chris Brown in the
top left hand corner. Carolina Dynamo scored the goal in the 52nd
minute, and that put the Legacy on the attack. Goalkeeper Chris Brown
started his first contest of the year after a tough comeback from a
knee injury, and performed brilliantly. Chris made 2 breakaway saves
in the second half to keep the Legacy within striking distance. The
Legacy thought they had scored when a header appeared to have crossed
the line, but
Carolina
’s keeper did a good job of clearing the ball out of the goal before
the Assistant Referee could confirm no goal.
Carolina
held a slight advantage on shots 11-10.
The
Legacy takes on the Northern VA Royals on Tuesday evening at
Albert/Daly. The Royals gave the Legacy their first loss of the year
and the Legacy are looking to return the favor. Game time will be
7:00 pm.
Come out and support the Legacy as they look to win and place
themselves in a tie for first place in the division.

battle to 2-2 tie

3-1-3
The
Williamsburg Legacy drew with the West Virginia Chaos Sunday night at
Albert Daly Field. The
Legacy playing their second game in less than 24 hours were held to a
disappointing 2-2 draw. In
a frenetic game that saw four goals scored in the span of twelve
minutes, the Legacy were a bit crushed after taking a 2-0 lead.
The Legacy opened the scoring when Brannon Thomas laid off a
ball to Ross MacKensie who crushed a
thirty-five yard blast over the Chaos keeper’s head.
Five minutes later the Legacy got a throw-in deep in Chaos
territory. Center Back
Brendan McCurdy came forward to take the throw.
A long throw ensued and in the confusion Clayton Voss caused
the Chaos to score an own goal. After
that fantastic start, the Legacy sort of fell asleep for ten minutes
and allowed the Chaos back into the contest.
The Chaos came thundering back as they pulled a goal back one
minute later. Five
minutes later the Chaos scored yet again to bring the contest level.
A good game was had by goal keeper Kris Rake as he made a
couple of fantastic breakaway saves to keep the score knotted at 2.
The
Legacy played better in the second half having a header bounce over
the crossbar and a number of chances go just wide.
The Legacy was unable to get the winner after out shooting the
Chaos 24-15 and holding a 6-2 corner advantage.
The Legacy looks to get back to their winning ways on Friday
June 16th as they take on a very good Carolina Dynamo team at
7pm
on Albert/Daly Field.

LEGACY
SUFFERS FIRST DEFEAT
Royals
get late goals to prevail 2-1
The
Legacy lost their first game of the year to the Northern Virginia
Royals Friday night in a 2-1 tightly contested match.
In a game that saw the Legacy outshoot their opponents 21-9, it
was a matter of not putting away their chances.
The Royals scored their first goal off a poor clearance from a
corner in the 66th minute. The ball skidded out to a
Northern Virginia
player who took a shot which ricocheted off Gregg Mottinger
and found the top corner of the net.
This proved to be a devastating goal for the Legacy as they had
the better of the play up to that point.
The
goal saw a change in formation as the Legacy had to throw players
forward in order to get the equalizer.
Northern Virginia
capitalized on the Legacy’s lack of cover in the back to grab a
second on a counter attack. The
Legacy responded with Ross MacKensie
scoring off a nice feed from forward Bobby O’Brien.
This created a frenzied final five minutes with the Legacy
hitting the cross bar and getting off a number of dangerous
opportunities. Alas, the
Legacy couldn’t pull back the equalizer and lost their first game
off the year.
The
Legacy’s record stands at
3-1-2
as they head into Saturday’s game against the West Virginia Chaos.

Legacy
Prevail In
Battle
Of The Unbeatens
Adam
Combs goal secures three points
It
was the battle of unbeatens when The Williamsburg Legacy and the
Virginia Beach Submariners squared off last night in a very exciting and
action packed game. The
Legacy started off slowly as the Submariners pressed early and earned
five corner kicks in a row. The
Legacy held strong until the fifth kick bounced out to the top of the
box and was passed out to Jared Kent who was isolated just inside the
eighteen. He then made a quick move to his right foot and banged home
the first goal with a powerful shot to the far post upper left corner.
The goal seemed to wake the Legacy up and the team started to get
a few clear cut chances. It was not until the latter part of the half
when a clever ball over the top from Matt Behncke sprung Clayton Voss in
behind the Submariners defense. As Voss headed to goal it left center
back, David Horst, with no option but to pull him down. Ross Mackenzie
stepped up to the spot and slotted the ball to the right of the
goalkeeper to put away his third goal of the season.
Going into the half the Legacy were feeling confident out
shooting their opponent 7-5.
The
Legacy came out once again firing on all cylinders as they kept
possession very well and seemed a little more settled in and comfortable
at the beginning of the second half.
With an early substitute from Greg Mottinger, in for the injured
Bryan Davis, the Legacy picked up right where they left off getting
plenty of good opportunities. Just
when it seemed the Submariners were starting to get back in the game
Edson Ellcock went in with a rash tackle on Behncke completely missing
the ball and colliding severely with him.
With the referee’s decision being a red card, Ellcock was
ejected from the game in the 64th minute giving the Legacy the spark
they needed.
Less
then ten minutes later a long throw in from Brendan McCurdy from the
corner was flicked on by Brannon Thomas at the near post and
subsequently buried by Adam Combs from two yards out. The Legacy were
not done yet as the Submariners converted to a
3-4-2
looking for the equalizer. The change in formation however left Andrew
Hoxie open for two point blank shots but he missed them both with Evan
Newton making two great saves. At the end of the day the extra man
proved to be too much for the Submariners with the Legacy keeping most
of the possession in the last 20 minute and Kris Rake staying solid in
the goal with seven saves on the night.
The
Legacy improve their record to 3-0-2 and the Submariners fall to
4-1-0
. The Legacy are idle for the next 10 days and will return to the field
on Saturday June 10th away to the Northern Virginia Royals.

Legacy
Battle
Knights to a 0-0 Draw
Improve
to 2-0-2 to remain unbeaten
The
Williamsburg Legacy drew with the Brooklyn Knights Saturday night at
Albert Daly Field in front of a crowd of 290 people.
Strong efforts from both goalkeepers, the Legacy’s Kris Rake
and the Knights’ Richard Gorske helped to
hold the game scoreless. The Legacy almost got on the board early in the
6th min when Brendan McCurdy’s header was cleared off the line by the
Knights. The Knights had
few opportunities on frame, with Rakes making three saves in the first
half. The Legacy again had
an attempt cleared off the line when a Ross Mackenzie effort off a
rebound was saved Gorske.
The
second half provided more scoring threats on both sides.
The Legacy kept the pressure on the Knights, and almost broke the
scoreless draw several times. Bobby
O’Brien’s header seemed to have found itself past the Knight’s
defense, but a fantastic save from Gorske
kept the ball out. The
Knights responded with a shot that bounced off the crossbar from Oscar
Tilley. The rebound came to
a Knight player and Rakes parried the ensuing
shot wide. The Legacy had
an opportunity in the 83rd minute with a fast break by Pat Scherder
but he was pulled down outside of the box by Knight defender
Randy Jean-Baptiste, who was red carded for
the foul. The Legacy’s
final chance came again from forward O’Brien who hit a volley that
nearly found it’s way home to give the
Legacy the victory.
The
Legacy’s record is now 2-0-2 as they head into tonight’s away game
at the Virginia Beach Submariners.

Legacy
Winner Is A Stunner
Late
winner from Ross Mackenzie proves to be the difference
The
Williamsburg Legacy made their home debut a success with a 1-0 win over
the West Virginia Chaos. In
the hot, afternoon sun, the Legacy’s Ross Mackenzie scored a cunning
75th minute free kick and the Legacy defense held strong for
the shutout and the win.
The
first half was scoreless but full of action with the Legacy out shooting
West Virginia
8-5.
West Virginia
’s Karim Boukhemis
had an early opportunity, but his shot found the crossbar and was
cleared away. Later in the
half, Legacy’s Pat Scherder fought through
the Chaos defense and almost put the Legacy ahead, but his shot
ricocheted off the post and out of play.
The Legacy’s defense held strong for the remainder of the first
half, anchored by a Man of the Match performance from goalkeeper Kris
Rake who made several key saves to preserve the shut out.
In
the second half, the Chaos seemed to be content with sitting in and
waiting for the counter attack. The
Legacy’s pressure finally broke the Chaos’ defense in the 75th
minute with a crafty free kick. A
foul was awarded for the Legacy at the top of the box and while the
Chaos defenders were arguing with the referee, Ross Mackenzie slipped
the ball past the Chaos’ defense to put the Legacy ahead
1-0. In the 76th
minute,
West Virginia
’s Boukhemis was sent off for dissent.
Playing a man up and a goal up, the Legacy secured the home win.
The
Legacy improved their record to 2-0-1 and will return to action May 27th
at

at Albert-Daly Field against the Brooklyn Knights. For

Ocean City Barons (1)
by Shawn Trueblood and Brian Davis
The Legacy started slow Saturday night in
Ocean City as the Barons scored in the 4th minute. Adam Sternberger
opened the scoring when his strong left-footed drive was out of the
reach of the Legacy's Kris Rake for the opening goal. On a very similar
play in the 87th minute the Legacy's Ross Mackensie leveled the match
for a 1-1 result.
The Barons Rich Baker got off a strong
goal bound drive in the 17th that forced a diving save from Rake
followed by another effort from Sternberger that found the crossbar in
the 19th.
For much of the remainder of the half
chances were hard to come by for both sides until just before the break.
The flurry started when Sternberger was put thru on the left and Rake
challenged for the ball and came up empty. Sternberger was staring at
the empty net and a last ditch diving challenge from Legacy defender Dan
Goonin kept the score at 1-0.
The Legacy mounted a response and forced
a fine diving save from Adam Edwards in the 43rd minute. A strong header
from the Legacy's Taylor Rowe went off the crossbar as stoppage time
wound down and the half ended 1-0 Barons.
For the second night in a row, the Legacy
came out very strong after halftime. The first real challenge of the
half came from a Legacy free kick that went narrowly over the bar in the
55th. The Legacy got off the strongest challenge on goal in the 76th
which was well saved by Edwards.
In the 81st minute a poor clearance from
Legacy goalkeeper Kris Rake was chested down by a Baron attacker and he
broke in alone. As Rake came out to challenge Carmichael's low drive
beat the keeper to his left but the shot glanced off the post and out.
In the 87th another strong throw by the
Legacy was headed down finding Mackensie near the top of the box and his
volleyed shot found net and the match was level.
There was one final moment of drama as
the Barons pressed for the winner in stoppage time. The Barons were
awarded an indirect free kick in the area to the right of Rake's goal
but the resulting effort by Heins sailed harmlessly high over the bar
and the match ended in the 1-1 stalemate.
The game was the Legacy's second
qualifier for the Open Cup. They return to action next Sunday, May 21st
in their home opener. Kickoff is 5:00pm at Albert Daly field.

Reading Rage (2)
by Shawn Trueblood and Brian Davis
The Williamsburg Legacy opened the season
with a big win on the road against the Reading Rage last Friday night.
The Legacy won 2-0 in front of 272 people at Exeter High School in
Reading, Pennsylvania.
The Legacy started a bit slow and the
Rage had the early advantage. The Rage had a few good early
opportunities in the run of play and with a few set pieces just outside
the box. Legacy goalkeeper Kris Rake held strong and kept the game tied.
After the legs warmed up from the 8 hour bus ride, the Legacy began to
carry much of the possession. Andrew Hoxie and Brannon Thomas each had
opportunities as the first half came to a close and remained tied. The
Rage held the shot advantage in the first half 7-3. Legacy coach Rich
Butler got the squad fired up with his halftime talk and the team came
out strong. The Legacy held most of the possession and created good
chances early in the half. In the 53rd minute Ross Mackenzie played a
good ball from the corner and center back Taylor Rowe headed home the
first goal of the season for the Legacy. Just 11 minutes later, the
Mackenzie-Rowe combination hooked up again off a corner to give the
Legacy a 2-0 lead. Rowe skied over Rage goalkeeper Jeremy Vuolo to
hammer home his second goal of the game. Neither the Legacy nor Rage had
serious opportunities after the second goal. The Legacy defense held
strong and kept the clean sheet. Goalkeeper Kris Rake played very strong
as he controlled the box and kept the Legacy focused in the back.
The game was also the Legacy's first
qualifier for the Open Cup. Shots were even with both teams having 10,
and the saves were also even with both goalkeepers making 4 saves. The
Legacy make the 3 hour drive to Ocean City to take on the Barons
tomorrow night at 7:30 pm.

VA Beach Mariners (4)
by Shawn Trueblood and Brian Davis

The
Williamsburg Legacy hosted the Virginia Beach Mariners of the United
Soccer Leagues First Division in their opening preseason game at
Christopher
Newport
University
. Although a scrimmage, the
Legacy came out and caught the Mariners on their heels.
The first thirty minutes belonged to the Legacy as Andrew Hoxie,
Brannon Thomas, Nate Burkey, and Greg Mottinger had quality chances to
score but could not capitalize. The
Legacy defense held strong and held the Mariners to a few distant
opportunities. However the
Legacy defense was broken down in the 30th minute when a through ball from
the left made its way to McColm Cephas who found the back of the net to
break the 0-0 draw. The Legacy
had trouble recovering and conceded three corners in a row. The third
resulted in a goal from the head of Russell Hutchison.
In the final minutes of the half there was confusion in the box as
the ball was cleared off the line but deflected off of the unfortunate
Legacy goalkeeper Kris Rake into the net.
Going
into halftime, Head Coach Richard Butler made four substitutions, Adam
Combs, Clayton Voss, Justin Vaughter, and Josh Simms made their season
debut replacing Burkey, Behncke, Monroe and Marklin. Once again the Legacy
came out and dominated the half until they gave up a free kick twenty
yards out in the 61st minute. With a well-placed shot, Lee Paul Scroggins
put a damper on the Legacy’s hopes once again, bringing the score line
to 4-0 with a curling direct free kick.
Veteran Bobby O’Brien made his season debut in the 61st
minute and really opened up the Legacy’s offensive attack as the team
had 14 shots in the second half. In
the 70th minute came the final two substitutes. Justin Madrid and Shawn
Trueblood gave the hard-working Gregg Mottinger and Ross Mackensie a
break. The Legacy kept pushing
for a goal, and it finally came in the second half when substitute Robbie
Wright capitalized on a poor pass by the Mariners and finished off a
volley at the far post. Soon after the Legacy goal, Shane McFaul of the
Mariners was given his second yellow card and a subsequent ejection
for multiple fouls in the 80th minute.
The Legacy pressed forward for the remaining 10 minutes causing
problems for the Mariners defense. Several chances were created by Bobby
O’Brien, Justin Madrid, and Brendan McCurdy.
Out shooting the Mariners 14-6, the Legacy, finished the second
half strong. Although the score ended 4-1 the Legacy were not disappointed
by their performance, possessing the ball very well and creating
opportunities against a team of professionals giving them confidence going
into the season opener against the Reading Rage.
Head
Coach Richard Butler: “This was a good opportunity for our players to
show me where they are at now that we are a week into the season.
Apart from the three set pieces that led to the three goals I felt
we played reasonably well. It
is now up to individuals to take responsibility and for us to come
together quickly as a team prior to Saturday evenings contest.”
