USL announces Players of the Week - 6-20-02

TAMPA, Fla. -- United Soccer Leagues announced the Players of the Week for Week 9 of the USL season, honoring Rochester’s Lenin Steenkamp, Arizona’s Mark Wilson, Williamsburg’s Carlos Garcia and Maryland’s Keri Sarver.

The Williamsburg Legacy have quietly built a lead in the PDL Mid Atlantic Division while division rival Raleigh has been enjoying the spotlight of their Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup success. PDL Player of the Week Carlos Garcia pushed the Legacy record to 8-3-0 with a three goals in a pair of wins last week.

In Friday’s road contest, Garcia tallied the game’s lone goal in the 34th minute for a 1-0 victory.

The following night, the CASL Elite nearly ended the Legacy’s winning streak at five only to see Garcia score each time it took the lead in the match. Garcia negated an early sixth-minute Raleigh tally with a strike just before the end of the half for a 1-1 halftime score. Raleigh took the lead again in the 63rd, but Garcia knotted the score at 2-2 by converting a penalty kick in the 90th minute. Moments later, Graham Albert scored the game-winner, averting overtime and pushing the club’s win streak to six.
