About
the Williamsburg Legacy:
After
more than a quarter of a century of operation, the Williamsburg Soccer
Club, a non-profit soccer club dedicated to the promotion of soccer,
education and youth development, joined the United Soccer Leagues (USL)
in 2001 when it was awarded a Premier Development League franchise. The
club’s primary purpose in obtaining a PDL affiliation was to provide
an additional opportunity to develop our local player’s soccer talents
to the maximum extent possible.
William
and Mary Head Men’s Soccer Coach Al Albert will head the coaching
staff of the new PDL Williamsburg “Legacy”. Several members of his
college staff and the Williamsburg Soccer Club’s Director of Coaching,
Richard Butler will assist him. “We will rely predominantly from a
pool of players including current and former Williamsburg Soccer Club
players as well as players from area colleges and local high schools to
comprise the core of our roster,” says Albert.
By
offering a United Soccer League affiliated PDL team as its flagship
team, the Williamsburg Soccer Club has uniquely distinguished itself
from almost all other youth soccer clubs in Virginia while providing the
Williamsburg area with its first community based sports venue in a
national league.
Premier
Development League
The Premier Development League is the highest
level of soccer in which a college or high school player can participate
while retaining their NCAA eligibility. As part of the USL pyramid
structure it is positioned under the professional D3 Pro League,
A-League and Major League Soccer. It is the largest national
developmental league in North America, featuring collegiate, amateur and
some professional players. The league consists of 48 teams nationwide
with the new Williamsburg “Legacy” participating in the South
Atlantic Division along with teams from Richmond, Washington/Baltimore,
Greenville and Raleigh.
