2 Former Williamsburg Legacy Players Drafted in MLS Supplementary Draft

Total of 3 former Legacy players drafted this year to MLS

The Williamsburg Soccer Club (WSC) and the Williamsburg Legacy have another record breaking day as two more Williamsburg Legacy players were drafted today in the Major League Soccer Supplementary Draft. Helmis Matute, who played for the Legacy in 2003, was the second pick in the second round and Noah Palmer, who played in 2002 and 2003, was selected as the first pick in the third round. Gonzalo Segares, who played for the Legacy in 2002, 2003 and 2004, had already been drafted in the third round proper of the first MLS Draft. In all 31 former Premier Development League players were drafted.

Palmer, drafted by Real Salt Lake in Utah, played in goal for the Legacy for two seasons as the Legacy won the Mid Atlantic Division in 2002 and were runners up in 2003. He was a stand out goal keeper playing in over 80% of the games. He will join former WSC player Matt Behncke in Salt Lake who was also traded to the expansion team. Matute was also drafted by an expansion team, Chivas, who will play out of Los Angeles. He is a left sided defender and midfielder who was on the 2003 squad that were Mid Atlantic Division runners up. “Both players have always wanted the chance to play at the highest level. This is a great opportunity for them to try to win a slot with one of these teams. Noah was a very good goalkeeper at the PDL level who kept us in many games over his two years with us. Helmis played at both left midfield and left back in his time with us. He has an attacking mentality and a very good left foot,” said Richard Butler, Head Coach of the Legacy.
