Today
the United Soccer Leagues released the Premier Development League
(PDL) schedule for the 2005 season. The Williamsburg Legacy will
play eight home and eight away games in the new 16 game format.
The Legacy will open up away at the West Virginia Chaos on May 7,
2005. The Legacy are scheduled to play the majority of their games
at Busch Field, the 3,000 seater stadium, at the College of
William and Mary but will also play a handful of games on the
exquisite Bermuda turf Captains Field at Christopher Newport
University in Newport News. There will also be at lease one
exhibition game against the Division One professional team the
Virginia Beach Mariners.
The
highlight of the schedule may come on June 4th when the
PDL National Champions, Central Florida Kraze, visit the Legacy.
The Craze won the 2004 PDL Championship in dramatic fashion
beating the Boulder Rapids Reserves with a late 88th
minute goal. “This will be a fantastic opportunity for our
players. With the Kraze coming to town it will give our players a
chance to play against some of the best players in PDL and the
champions from last year. It will be a big challenge for the
guys”, said head coach, Richard Butler. The Legacy will also
make a Florida swing as the new scheduling will send them to Miami
to play the Palm Beach Pumas and to Bradenton to play the
Bradenton Academicals. “I think the new scheduling is a positive
for the Mid Atlantic Conference,” continued Butler, “it will
give us all a chance to see a few different teams from another
conference and will present us with new challenges. Otherwise if
you’re playing the same teams over and over again it all becomes
a bit repetitive. I believe it will be good for the league.”
Last
year the Legacy were 11-7-0 and returned to the playoffs for the
third straight year. The Legacy have never missed the playoffs in
their short history. “It will be a tough league. We have great
rivalries with the Richmond Future, Raleigh CASL Elite and the
Greensboro Dynamo. Most of the time the games are tight affairs.
Once again I see the league being very competitive where just
about any one has the chance to make the playoffs. The two who go
will certainly need to get on a roll and also have some luck along
the way,” concluded Butler
