Today
the Williamsburg Legacy released their 2006 Premier
Development League (PDL) season schedule. The Legacy enter
their 5th season with an over all record of 39-26-5. The
Legacy have reached the play offs in four of their five
seasons and in 2002, in their inaugural season, were crowned
Mid Atlantic Champions of the PDL. Last year was a
disappointing year for the team as they managed only a
4-9-3
finish. Richard Butler, Director of Coaching for the
Williamsburg Soccer Club (WSC) will continue on as the head
coach in 2006.
There
will be several new features to this years’ schedule.
First, and most importantly, the Legacy will play all their
home games on the year old Albert/Daly Field stadium. The
stadium is a soccer specific, Bermuda grass stadium with
seating for 1,500 fans. “It
will be great to get on natural grass surface and into this
brand new facility. The
College
of
William
and Mary have been very good about our lease agreement with
playing at Albert/Daly rather than Busch Field. It will be
nice to host all our home games at such a magnificent
facility. Most of our games are played in great facilities
and if you add to that Albert/Daly and now the Virginia
Beach Sportsplex (home of the
Submariners) these players will play in some very good
stadiums over the summer”, said Butler. Secondly, there will be some new teams to play. The
Virginia Beach Submariners come into the division as the
“new boys” and there are trips to play new teams in
Florida, New Jersey and Pennsylvania
.
The
Legacy starts their season with a two game road trip to
Ocean City, NJ and then on to
Reading, PA
during the second weekend of May. The opening night at home
for the Legacy will see them play the West Virginia Chaos at
5pm on Sunday May 21 at Albert/Daly. “It will be
interesting to see these new teams. Of the 16 league games
that we will play we have never faced 5 of our opponents”,
said Butler. “I’m sure that from the ones we know that the Richmond
Kickers Future, Carolina Dynamo and Raleigh Elite will be
very strong. Having spoken to other GMs and coaches around
the league the Ocean City Barons seem to be the pick of the
teams we haven’t faced before. This is a strong nationwide
league and I’m looking forward to the summer’, he
continued.
