Today the Williamsburg Legacy named their squad for the upcoming Premier Development League (PDL) season. The PDL is a nationwide league operated by the United Soccer Leagues. The Legacy plays in the Mid Atlantic Division of the league along with Raleigh CASL Elite (NC), Greensboro Dynamo (NC), Richmond Kickers Future (VA) and West Virginia Chaos (WV).

The Legacy has been in existence since the summer of 2002 and this year will compete in its fourth season of play. The team is the senior team for all the other youth teams in the Williamsburg Soccer Club (WSC). It is the team for all youth players to look up to and to emulate. Over the first three seasons the team record is 35-17-2. Each season the Legacy has made the playoffs, winning the Mid Atlantic Division in 2002. Each of the three years the Legacy has lost in the first round of the play offs.

“This years squad is as strong as we have ever had”, said Richard Butler, head coach of the Legacy. “If we can play well as a unit and stay healthy I think we have a good shot at getting into the play offs once again. The local colleges in Virginia have been great about getting us quality players and it is exciting for me to see guys from UAB, my alma mata, coming here to play for the summer. We certainly have some experience with both Brandon Thomas and Robbie Wright returning as the oldest players and then several players already have PDL experience. It’s only a few days until we start training and hopefully we will jell quickly. If that’s the case I’m sure we will play a high level, fast paced exciting attacking game.”

The squad includes five players from the College of William and Mary,  five from Old Dominion University, four from Virginia Commonwealth University, three from the University of Alabama Birmingham and seven from Christopher Newport University. There are also players from Virginia Tech, Campbell University and Longwood University. The squad includes 12 former Williamsburg Soccer Club youth players. In all there are 28 players. “I think we have some very good players in the mix. We are at 28 players at the moment but I hope to go to 30 before our first game on May 7. “We are very strong in goal and also at the back. We also have some very creative players in the middle of the park and up top”, commented Butler. “I see us being able to attack down the middle but also through flank play given the players that we will have on hand.”

The Legacy open their season away to the West Virginia Chaos on Saturday May 7. The first home game will be against the Virginia Beach Mariners in an exhibition to be played at Christopher Newport University on May 4th at 7pm and the first scheduled home league game is on May 22nd at 5pm at Busch Field at William and Mary versus the West Virginia Chaos. Tickets for all league games are $5 for adults $3 for youths under 18.
