Legacy Sign 22 Players For The 2006 Season
13
Players are either current Legacy players or former Williamsburg
Soccer Club Youth players
The
Williamsburg Legacy head office today announced the signing of 22
players for the upcoming Premier Development League (PDL) season. Of
the 22, 13 have either played for the Legacy in previous seasons or
have played within the Williamsburg Soccer Club (WSC) youth
development program. The players also include college players from
regional soccer powers
Old
Dominion
University
, the
College
of
William
and Mary and
Virginia
Commonwealth
University
. “The quality of player is very high this year,” said Head Coach,
Richard Butler. “After the disappointments of last year with not
qualifying for the play-offs and struggling to score goals it was
important for me to put a squad together that can potentially win
every game. I believe that the guys I have assembled during the off
season will be able to do that. We are deep in all positions and
possess a tremendous amount of creativity through our midfield and up
front. It is great to see a number of former players ‘get the nod’
to return to the squad and it is very satisfying for me to see 8
former WSC youth players now making the grade with the senior team.”
The
Legacy play an exhibition match against the
USL Division One side, Virginia Beach Mariners, on Tuesday night. The
game will be held on the campus of
Christopher
Newport
University
at
7pm
at the soccer specific Captain Field Stadium. The Mariners are
2-1-0
and won last night 1-0 against the Atlanta Silverbacks. The Legacy
will be on the road for their opening two games. The team plays the
Reading Rage, in
Reading
,
PA
, on Friday night and then travel east to
Ocean City
,
NJ
, to face the Ocean City Barons. The Barons are a perennial power in
the Northeast and defeated the Legacy 2-1 in overtime in the Eastern
Conference semi final in 2004 in their only contest to date.
“The
season always get going very quickly in
this league,” continued
Butler
. We have trained three times this week, we’ll have an intra squad
scrimmage tomorrow night (Sunday), train lightly on Monday evening and
then host the Mariners on Tuesday night. From then on games will come
thick and fast. With the division we are in the title could go to
anyone. All five teams have numerous youth clubs and university level
players to choose from so it will be very interesting. We will have
eight home games and eight away games but a two of them will be fairly
local when we go to
Virginia Beach
and up to
Richmond
. These games are a fantastic opportunity for our youth players to
observe what it really takes to get to the next level whether they are
male or female. We hope to see many people in the stands cheering us
along.”
Tickets
for Legacy home games are $5 for adults and $3 for children under 18.
