The rainy weather on Saturday night did not hamper
the Williamsburg Legacy’s first game of their inaugural PDL season
against Greenville Lions Premier of South Carolina. The Legacy recorded
their very first victory ever in a 6-0 shoot-out over the Lions in front
of 193 fans at Busch Field in Williamsburg, Va.
It
didn’t take long for the Legacy to get on the scoreboard as player/coach
Richard Butler scored the very first goal in Legacy history on a
forty-yard bomb in the first minute of the game. The Legacy continued
their goal scoring when Randy Ugarte, off an assist from Brian Wells,
scored a goal in the 16th minute. The Legacy continued to pressure the
Lions for the entire first half.
Leading
the way in the second half was forward Carlos Garcia who recorded a hat
trick. Garcia’s first goal came in the 64th minute on a free kick from
just outside the eighteen-yard box. Two minutes later the Legacy scored
again as Randy Ugarte sent a ball to Garcia, who scored again. In the 84th
minute, off an assist from player/coach Johnny Kamara, Garcia scored his
final goal of the game. Bobby O’Brien, who came on late in the second
half, closed out the scoring for the Legacy.
In
goal for the Lions were Richard Gilstrap and Alex Hall.
The
Lions had several chances on goal, with their offensive power provided by
Rory Scovel, Dustin Hammond, and Seth Jensen. However, the Legacy defense
led by Kris Feldmann and Milorad Djordjevic, denied the Lions on all
scoring opportunities. Legacy goalkeeper Noah Palmer recorded the shutout
with 3 saves.
The
Legacy next takes on the Hampton Roads Mariners of the A-League in a
scrimmage on Wednesday, May 8 at 7 p.m. at Christopher Newport College in
Newport News Va. The Legacy
goes on the road to take on Raleigh CASL Elite for their next game on
Friday, May 10 at 7:30.
