Virginia Legacy Start Season on the Right Foot
Legacy wins the season opener 2-0
Williamsburg, VA (May 12, 2007) - The Virginia Legacy PDL team opened up the 2007 campaign with a 2-0 victory over the visiting West Virginia Chaos. The Legacy, under the direction of first year Head Coach Kevin Darcy, jumped out to an early lead and never looked back.
Former Maryland Terrapin Erwin Diaz scored in the 7th minute when he pounced on a loose ball about 25yds out and hit a first time shot into the lower left hand corner beating Chaos netminder Ryan Chance.
The Legacy wasted no time as they found the net again in the 28th minute when Jeremy Harris’ shot was blocked and former Legacy youth player and William and Mary standout Andrew Hoxie tapped in the rebound.
Goalkeeper Zak Thompson was forced to make one good save in the first half smothering a breakaway from a West Virginia forward to preserve a 2-0 halftime lead. The Legacy outshot the Chaos 10 – 5 in the first half, and 16 – 9 on the night.
The Legacy backline held strong throughout and never allowed the Chaos a chance to get back in the game. “I am happy to get the result, but particularly happy with how we defended, plugging holes, winning air balls and denying penetration all game long. For just getting the team together we stayed pretty organized and moved as a block instead of as individuals. At times we were not clean in possession, but we continually found Hoxie up top, built numbers into the attack and produced a number of good goal scoring chances.” Kevin Darcy
The Legacy will travel to Reading, PA to take on the Rage on Wednesday evening in hopes of going 2-0 on the season and inching closer to a US Open Cup birth.
